Text Box:

The Catechumenate or Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process through which adults become full members of the Roman Catholic Church. The process respects the ongoing experience of conversion in each person’s life. The RCIA is designed to provide the time, support and knowledge needed to make a free and informed decision concerning membership in the Catholic Church. Specifically, those who have not been baptized or who have been baptized in another Christian denomination are welcome to participate in the RCIA. The process could also be helpful for baptized Catholics who have not been active members of the church for an extended period of time. Ordinarily participation in the Catechumenate lasts between one to two years, depending on the needs of each person. The culmination of the RCIA process takes place at the Easter Vigil where new members are welcomed into the Church through the Sacrament of Baptism or their Profession of Faith as Roman Catholics.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the Church’s process for individuals to become Catholic and receive the sacraments of initiation—Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. For some, this process completes their Christian initiation, as they are already baptized in another Christian community, and seek full communion with the Catholic Church. RCIA at St. John’s meets on Monday evenings from 7-9 p.m. in the Church basement. The first meeting is Sept 8, 2008. Adults interested in learning more about the Catholic faith, in preparing to become Catholic (or in completing their Catholic sacraments), in serving on the RCIA ministry team, or in serving as a sponsor should contact Michael Podrebarac at 913-647-0330 or liturgy@archkck.org.

The initial stage of the RCIA is called Inquiry. After an initial meeting with the RCIA director, those who have an interest in learning more about the Catholic faith meet in an informal communal setting. These Inquiry gatherings take place throughout the year and typically run between six and eight weeks.
